Hazard, Kentucky. Known as the "Queen City of the Mountains," Hazard is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Perry County and was founded in 1790 by Elijah Combs and his seven brothers. The county and county seat were later named for American naval hero Commodore Oliver-Hazard Perry, who was victorious over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Rich in natural resources, Hazard and Perry County's history is tied to the coal and lumber industries. Both industries, along with other significant historical events are highlighted in the town's own museum.
